Ἰσοκράτης, an Athenian orator, born B.C. 436, died by his own hand on hearing of the defeat of Chaironeia, B.C. 338. Twenty-one of his speeches, mostly rather political pamphlets than speeches, are extant. Out of his school proceeded Isaios, Hyperides, Demosthenes, and others of the chief orators.
